Samaritans is a registered charity aimed at providing emotional support to anyone in emotional distress, struggling to cope, or at risk of suicide throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland.
Those of you who know me will probably know that I am a huge advocate for the work that Samaritans do, and today I would like to tell you why.
Non-judgmental support
All volunteers are fully trained to actively listen to callers in a non-judgmental way. You can talk about absolutely anything and they will never judge you. It’s really liberating.
Sticking it out
The volunteer will stay on the phone as long as you need – I’ve never felt hurried off a phone call, even when I once stayed on the line for two hours straight.
Free service
It is free to contact the Samaritans from a landline or mobile (even pay-as-you-go – you don’t need any credit to ring them).
Accessible
You can contact Samaritans in various ways: on the phone, by email, by letter, or in person. So, if you’re not feeling up to speaking on the phone, there are loads of other options for getting in touch and getting support.
Always there
Samaritans run their service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days of the year. I know for me, most of my more intense crises happen late at night when no one is around to help – but they are.
If you need help, support, or just someone to talk to, call Samaritans on 116 123, or go to their website for alternative methods of communication.
If you are able to support Samaritans, with a one-off gift or a monthly donation, you can do so by clicking here.
Have you ever spoken to Samaritans? What was your experience? Let me know in the comments.
If you like my blog and/or find it useful, please consider donating to help me cover the costs of maintaining it. You can either buy me a coffee on Ko-fi, or donate straight to my PayPal.
I’ve called the samaritans a few times and each time, they have been so supportive and helpful. This is a great post!
